Национальный парк "Плещеево озеро" был создан 26 сентября 1988 года с целью сохранения и восстановления уникального природно-исторического комплекса. Парк расположен в центральной части русской равнины, в бассейне Верхней Волги, на юге Ярославской области, в районе древнего города Переславля-Залесского. Природной жемчужиной национального парка и всей Верхней Волги является озеро Плещеево. Общая площадь, занимаемая национальным парком составляет около 24217.06 га., в том числе акватория озера Плещеева - 5980 га. В озере обитает 16 видов рыб. Самая известная же переславская рыбка-ряпушка, или "царская селедка". Ландшафты национального парка, также как и озера, поражают своей красотой: они вобрали в себя крутые откосы высоких холмов, многочисленные реки и ручьи, болотные массивы и бесконечные леса. Природные комплексы здесь гармонично сочетаются с памятниками истории и культуры древнего Переславля.

Флора в парке насчитывает 826 видов сосудистых растений. В её составе много лекарственных, медоносных, кормовых, декоративных и съедобных растений. Среди редких видов выявлено 10, включенных в Красную книгу РФ: венерин башмачок настоящий, борец Флерова, пальчатокоренник Траунштейнера, надбородник безлистный, полушник щетинистый, полушник озёрный, офрис насекомоносная, пальчатокоренник балтийский, наяда гибкая. В парке встречается около 300 видов позвоночных. Наряду с типично таёжными животными (лось, глухарь, кедровка) здесь обитают животные степной фауны-золотая щурка, обыкновенная сизоворонка, удод, обыкновенный зимородок. Характерными представителями диких животных являются: лисица, заяц-русак, заяц-беляк, белка обыкновенная, куница лесная, выдра, горностай, ласка, рысь, барсук, бурый медведь, ёж обыкновенный, кабан, косуля, благородный олень. В 2017 году обнаружена орешниковая соня. Акклиматизированны: пятнистый олень, енотовидная собака, ондатра. Орлан-белохвост, скопа, русская выхухоль, мнемозина, переславская ряпушка, кулик-сорока (материковый подвид), большой кроншнеп, обыкновенный серый сорокопут, встречающиеся на территории национального парка, занесены в Красную книгу РФ.

Необычный уголок природы национального парка представляет собой дендрологический сад имени С.Ф. Харитонова площадью 58 га. Здесь собрано более 600 наименований древесно-кустарниковых растений природной флоры Сибири, дальнего Востока, Японии и Китая, Крыма и Кавказа, других регионов.

The national park “Lake Pleshcheyevo” was established of the 26th of September, 1988 with the purpose of preserving and restoring a unique natural and historical complex. The park is located in the Central part of the Russian flatland, in the basin of the Upper Volga, in the south of the Yaroslavl region, in the district of the ancient town of Pereslavl-Zalesskiy, The natural pearl of the national park and the whole Upper Volga is Lake Pleshcheyevo. The area of the national park is about 24,000 ha, including the water area of Lake Pleshcheyevo of 5,980 ha. There are 16 fish species in the lake. The most famous fish of the lake is ryapushka (Coregonus albula pereslavicus), so-called “tsar herring”. Landscapes of the national park as well as lakes strike with their beauty: they comprise steep slopes of high hills, various rivers and brooks, swamps and endless forests. Natural complexes are here in harmony with monuments of history and culture of ancient Pereslavl.

The plant life estimates 826 species of vascular plants. There are a lot of herbal, melliferous, feed crops, decorative and eatable plants. Among rare species there are ten included in the Red Book - List of endangered species of the Russian Federation: Cypripedium calceolus, Aconitum flerovii, Dactylorhiza traunsteineri, Epipógium aphýllum, Isoetes setacea, Isoétes lacústris, Óphrys insectífera, Dactylorhíza baltica, Nájas fléxilis, Neottianthe cucullata. There are about 300 species of vertebrate animals. Along the typically taiga animals (elk, wood grouse, nutcracker (Nucifraga)) , animals of steppe wildlife inhabit the park: golden bee-eater (Merops apiaster), common rodent (Coracias garrulus), hoopoe (Upupa epops), common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis). The most characteristic representatives of wild animals are: fox, European hare, white hare, common squirrel, pine marten, otter, ermine, weasel, lynx, badger, brown bear, common hedgehog, wild boar, roe deer, red deer. In 2017 common dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius) was discovered. Several species became acclimatised: dapple deer (Cervus nippon), raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides), muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus). Some species inhabiting the park - Haliaeetus albicilla, Pandion haliaetus, Desmana moschata, Parnassius mnemosyne, Coregonus albula pereslavicus, Haematopus ostralegus, Numenius arquata, Lanius excubitor - are included in the Red Book - List of endangered species of the Russian Federation.

An unusual nook of nature of the national park is the arboretum named after S.F. Kharitonov with the square of 58 ha. Here you can find over 600 items of trees, bushes and lianas typical for the plant life of Siberia, the Far East, Japan and China, the Crimea and the Caucasus and some other regions.
